Indiana Deploys National Guard Amid Winter Storm

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb has deployed the National Guard in response to a massive winter storm expected to bring heavy snow and ice to the state this weekend.

In a press release, Holcomb's office announced that over 120 National Guardsmen will begin deploying on Sunday to assist stranded motorists and respond to winter emergencies statewide. The deployment is expected to remain active through at least Tuesday to address the storm's impacts.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), most of central and southern Indiana, including Indianapolis, Muncie, and Terre Haute, is under a winter storm warning until Monday night. Forecasters predict snowfall totals of 6 to 12 inches across the area, with additional ice accumulation in some regions.

Southern Indiana faces an even greater threat, as an ice storm warning remains in effect through Monday morning. Meteorologists warn of up to one-half inch of ice accumulation, which could severely impact travel and infrastructure.

Officials caution that travel could become "impossible" in the hardest-hit areas, with the weight of accumulating ice likely damaging power lines and tree limbs. The accompanying blast of frigid air will keep ice frozen on surfaces, potentially prolonging power outages amid freezing temperatures.

Temperatures are not expected to rise above freezing until Friday or Saturday, exacerbating the challenges for residents and emergency responders.
